Slow Stitching

I have a few secret sewing projects going on right now (new quilt patterns coming soon!), so I thought I'd give you an update on an ongoing project.

I started making hexies from Sarah Watts' Honeymoon fabric line (for Cotton + Steel) back in February. I had never made a hexie before, but the tutorial from Modern Handcraft seemed easy enough. So thanks to a road trip and my pledge to sew 20 minutes a day in February (Beth of EvaPaige Quilts hosts DAGMT every year - join in!), I took the plunge.

After turning just one charm pack into hexies, I decided I actually enjoyed the process (I used to loath hand stitching!), and I liked the fabric line too (I originally chose that charm pack because I thought the fabric was ugly and I couldn't ruin it if the hexie thing didn't work out)! Turns out, I REALLY enjoy making them, and I REALLY love the fabric!

So I bought a fat quarter bundle of the fabric and cut it into 2 1/2" squares. I use my Cricut machine (I have this one) to cut 1" hexies out of cardstock whenever I run low. (Each side measures 1".) I keep a zipper pouch of supplies in the glove box of the car and make hexies whenever I ride shotgun.

I only work on hexies when in the car, so this quilt has many more miles until the finish line!

Thanks to a road trip over Thanksgiving weekend, I was able to add a few more hexies to my box of finished ones. I just keep them in a clear fishing tackle box.

Here are the current statistics on this project:

First stitch: February 5, 2016
Finished hexies: 466
Final goal: 1,134
Progress: 41% done

I love being productive and having something to show for the time I spend riding in the car. It would be very interesting to calculate how many miles or how many hours this quilt will take! I'm already calling this quilt an "heirloom quilt" due to the number of hours that will be in it!

I hope to provide regular updates on this project during 2017, so hold me to it!
