Amanda's Memory Quilt (#1)

Monday, April 20, 2015

My husband's half-sister, Amanda, went to clean out her mom’s house after she had passed away in order to have a garage sale. She discovered that her mom had quite the fabric stash and asked if I would make a memory quilt for her. Of course, I agreed!

My mom went to the garage sale to potentially buy some fabric, but discovered it all to be dated and mostly not quilting cotton. She showed Amanda what fabrics would work for quilting. Amanda said she would pick some she liked and mail me a box.

When I received the box, I discovered that very little of the fabrics she sent were cotton. There were clothing items (lightweight, see-through shirt, bridesmaid type dress, her grandpa’s plaid shirt, etc) and many fabrics of various types. I scoured Pinterest looking for scrap quilts that might be suited for the project. I texted some pictures to Amanda to see what she liked, and she didn’t like any of them.

I saw a sashed triangle quilt on Instagram in a picture of a booth at Quilt Market that I thought would work. There was a large piece of blue chambray fabric that I decided to use for the sashing. I cut triangles from every fabric in the box (after ironing fusible web to the back of the thinnest ones). [Can you tell from the pictures I had just finished the LSU quilt?]

I sewed the triangles into rows, then sewed the rows together. A couple rows did not line up at all. I left the edges angled, and gave to my localish longarmer Kathy Michel to quilt. She quilted it with an all-over stipple design (like this one!). I sewed a couple of the largest fabric pieces together to use as the quilt back. Once I got it back, I decided since the edges did not line up, I would cut them straight. I used a red fabric from the box for binding.

I gave the quilt (along with this one and this one!) to Amanda when she came to visit us the weekend of May 2nd.

When Amanda originally sent me the box of fabrics to make a memory quilt from her mom’s fabric stash, I quickly concluded I could make many quilts from the fabric in the box. I decided I would secretly make three quilts – one for each sibling. (See the other two here and here.)

Three quilts for three siblings. A beautiful tribute to a mother and sewist.
